Before we discuss how to grow grapes, let's get some basic information about grapes...

Grapes grow on wood vines and in clusters.  You've likely seen grapes in various colors like blue, black, purple, red, white, peach, pink, and brown.  People grow grapes for various reasons such as raisins, jelly, jams, etc.  Regardless, of your reasons for wanting to grow grapes, we want to give you a better understanding.

When planting grapes, you need to evaluate your soil.  Hard clay soil can form a hard surface in the sunshine which affects the water filtration.  Sandy soil unlike heartier soils will not be able to hold the water and will filter it out.  My point is that you need good rich gravely soil than can hold water and allow the sun to do it's job.  Be sure to evaluate your soil before growing grapes.  While grapevines can tolerate a wide pH range they prefer a slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5  but can grow fine with a pH from 5.5 to 7.5.

Some of the tools that you will need to grow grapes include a shovel, hoe, wire cutters, gloves, and a kniffen system which is made up of stakes and a series of wires.  You should plant grapes in the spring as soon as the soil is ready.  Plants should be planted around 7 feet apart.  Make sure the roots are healthy.  Also, plant around 3 to 5 feet deep into the soil.

Important Notice:  Grapes need sunshine!  So be sure to avoid shady areas with trees and bushes.

Here are a few varieties of grapes: Aurora, Bluebell, Concord, Edelweiss, and Leon Millot.  Again, these are just a few varieties.
